Chicago – River North: Mr. Beef

Mr. Beef, at 666 North Orleans Street, has been serving Italian Beef sandwiches to Chicago’s River North neighborhood out of its 120-seat eatery since 1977.
Italian Beef is a sandwich of thin slices of seasoned roast beef, dripping with meat juices, on a dense, long Italian-style roll that is often dipped into the juices the meat is cooked in and topped off with Chicago-style giardiniera (called "hot") or sauteed, green Italian sweet peppers (called "sweet"). Its origins are disputed, although it is generally accepted to date to Chicago in the 1930s. One story traces it Italian immigrants from the old Union Stock Yards, who would bring home the tougher, less desirable cuts of beef sold by the company and used this approach to make it more tender and tasty.
